Summer Residency

The summer residency is a 11-week commitment from June - August. The program suits those who are self-directed, detail oriented and community minded. Applicants must have the willingness to work hard at studio maintenance and organization as well as assisting Clay Camp instructors working with children ages 6-14. Applicants must be available for the full 11 weeks of the residency term. There are no camps the last week, as this time is for helping to finish, glaze, fire, and box kid’s work.

Benefits include 24-hour studio access, use of community studio equipment, attending visiting ARTIST lectures, discounts on classes and electric kiln firing. Residents will also receive a stipend of $360 per week. Residents are responsible for their own housing, living expenses, personal material costs and firing fees.

In exchange for what the center provides, the Summer Resident is responsible for assisting Odyssey's Kids Clay Camp five hours per day, Monday through Friday. Duties include assisting instructors, working with children, firing kilns, mixing glazes, cleaning, organizing supplies and general studio maintenance. Summer Residents act as representatives of Odyssey ClayWorks and are expected to conduct themselves in a friendly and professional manner while executing their responsibilities thoroughly and efficiently.

Odyssey ClayWorks is a working studio, art school and gallery, which promote understanding, appreciation and professional development in the ceramic arts. The spirit and programs of Odyssey are based on the philosophy that every individual's creative capacity is greatly enhanced by a generous community and challenging instruction. We believe that within each individual lies the potential for creative development.

Kindness, teamwork, support, respect, and community are the five core elements of Odyssey's Programs. Our intention for the Summer Resident Artist Program is to provide progressive students with the opportunity to enrich their educational experience while working within a creatively stimulating studio environment. The program emphasizes learning through a range of inspiring classes, workshops, lectures, and hands-on experiences as well as networking within a large community of artists both at Odyssey and in the River Arts District of Asheville.
